AT&T’s faster 4G LTE network now available in Metro Detroit

AT&T has turned on its 4G LTE network in Metro Detroit, bringing customers in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties the latest generation of wireless network technology.

-- Faster speeds. LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. Customers can stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before.
-- Faster response time. LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file once you've sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine.
-- More efficient use of spectrum. Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.

"21st century jobs require 21st century infrastructure and that means advanced technology and fast connections," said Lt. Governor Brian Calley.  "High tech investment from great partners like AT&T is helping make Michigan's economic comeback possible.  Thanks to investments like these, local job makers are staying connected better and faster than ever before, helping Michigan compete in the global economy."

"We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Metro Detroit responds to what customers want from their mobile experience - more, faster, on the best devices," said Jim Murray, president, AT&T Michigan.

AT&T's 4G LTE network delivers speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G, as well as multiple innovations that optimize the network for performance. Our network's radio components are placed close to the antenna at most cell sites, instead of inside the base station, which helps minimize power loss between the base station and antenna and, in turn, improves the performance of our 4G LTE network. The network also is designed with its core elements distributed across the country, which helps reduce latency, or the delay when using the Internet, because your request isn't traveling as far.
Customers to benefit from ultra-fast mobile Internet on the latest LTE devices.

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network expanding to Jackson County

Verizon Wireless is expanding its 4G LTE service to much of Jackson County in the coming weeks, allowing businesses and residents to tap into the nation’s fastest wireless network that now covers 75 percent of the U.S. population in 371 markets.

The soon-to-be-expanded coverage area includes: Jackson, Springport, Parma Township, Concord, Spring Arbor, Sandstone, Pleasant Lake, Rives Township, Blackman Township, Michigan Center, Leoni Township, South Jackson, Clarklake, Napoleon and Brooklyn.
Within Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE service area, Verizon customers with 4G LTE-enabled devices can stream video, share music and photos, surf the Web and download files at speeds up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G networks. For businesses using the network, theincreasing spread of broadband connectivity provides the most sophisticatedwireless capabilities for economic advancement.

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE customers in the coverage area should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits (Mbps) per second on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

“People across Michigan are increasingly relying on tablets, smartphones and apps to stay organized, connected and entertained,” said John Granby, president–Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. “Our investment in Michigan has kept us ahead of these consumer trends and underscores our belief that 4G LTE delivers the best value to customers by maximizing the performance of theirwireless devices.”

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area in Michigan or elsewhere, the devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless’ 3G network is the most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their areas.

"High tech investment from great partners like AT&T is helping make Michigan's economic comeback possible. Thanks to investments like these, local job makers are staying connected better and faster than ever before, helping Michigan compete in the global economy."

LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. Customers will be able to stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before on the latest LTE-compatible smartphones, tablets and devices.

"Detroit enjoys AT&T's fast 4G speeds today as part of the nation's largest 4G network, and our teams will be working hard across the city toward our upcoming 4G LTE launch," said Jim Murray, president of AT&T Michigan. "AT&T customers in Detroit can look forward to even faster speeds this year, on our leading lineup of smartphones, tablets and other devices."

Subaru debuts new EyeSight driver assistance system WITH VIDEO

Subaru of America, Inc. has announced the debut of its EyeSight driver assistance system. The suite of safety and driver assist technologies will debut at the New York International Auto Show on 2013 Legacy and Outback models.

EyeSight will subsequently appear on other products in the Subaru line-up. EyeSight integrates adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and vehicle lane departure warning. The new technology, which can also detect obstacles in front of a parked car and limit potential damage in an impact, will become available later this year.
Combining safety and convenience features, the Subaru EyeSight system will be one of the most affordable such technologies available in the United States market. EyeSight uses two charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras developed by Subaru. EyeSight is mounted inside the car on the upper edge of the windshield, thus reducing the potential for damage that could occur in bumper-mounted systems, such as radar. The EyeSight system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items.
The video information is relayed to the EyeSight computer, which is also networked with the car’s braking system and electronic throttle control. Below speeds of approximately 19mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight is able to bring the car to a complete stop, thus avoiding a collision.

Pre-Collision Braking Control and Collision Mitigation
At relative speeds under approximately 19 mph, EyeSight’s Pre-Collision Braking System can detect obstacles in the car’s path and, if the driver has not applied the brakes in time, the system can do so to slow the vehicle or bring it to a full stop to help avoid the potential collision. Pre-Collision Braking is always on in the background to act like a second set of eyes for the driver. It can also be turned off temporarily for off-road or rough road travel.
At relative speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately. In this way it will mitigate potential damage from a collision. The system, which can recognize programmed objects such as vehicles, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, can help mitigate collision damage.

Lane Departure and Sway Warning
By monitoring traffic lane markers and lines, the Subaru EyeSight system can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane. Using the turn signal cancels the warning.

Adaptive Cruise Control
Intended for freeway use, Eyesight’s Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Adaptive Cruise Control is operational from 1-87 mph and can fully brake the vehicle to a stop if the system “locks on” to a vehicle ahead.
As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in heavy “stop and go” freeway traffic by maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead. This feature can help reduce driver fatigue, which can therefore help keep the driver alert.

Additional EyeSight Benefits
In heavy traffic conditions, EyeSight will also alert the driver when the vehicle ahead has moved if he or she doesn’t react within several seconds. The technology can also help reduce collision damages by cutting the throttle when it senses an obstacle in front, but the accelerator pedal continues to be pushed. The system is also effective when a driver shifts into ‘Drive’ inadvertently instead of ‘Reverse’ when backing out of a parking space. The stereo camera design of EyeSight provides a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems.

Cautions
EyeSight is not designed as a substitute for due care and attention to the road. The system may not react in every situation. There are certain operational limitations, such as when weather conditions obscure the view of the cameras. Finally, even with the advanced technology used, a driver with good vision and who is paying attention will always be the best safety system.

My take on gadget makers' holiday offerings — From Apple to Blackberry to Microsoft, Motorola and more

All the gadget makers are coming out with new products this fall as the holiday buying season kicks in. Here's my quick takes.

iPhone 5: Announced Wednesday, this will obviously be a big hit. The iPhone always is. But when you look at the upgrades, Apple is once again just catching up to its Android competition (bigger screen, thinner phone, panorama camera shots, etc.). It's hardly innovative, and soon the Android competition will be better than it. Still, Apple fans will come out in droves and buy the new iPhone, and in the end it mostly comes down to your choice of operating systems. Some folks prefer Android, others like Apple's iOS.

A smaller iPad; This is rumored to be coming -- a 7-inch iPad to compete with the Kindle Fire and other smaller tablets that are starting to eat away at Apple's tablet domination (which is still dominating, but not as much so as in the past). This might prove popular, and it's probably a smart business move for competition's sake, but I don't see this being a huge seller. I've tried many 7-inch tablets, and usually I'm not very impressed. I'm pretty sure this will fall in that same boat.

New Kindle Fire lineup: Speaking of small tablets, the key is to the have the right price. Amazon's Kindle Fire is more affordable than most of its competition, so it is more popular. That should continue this year, and it should sell better than most 7-inch tablets -- though an Apple offering could gum up the works a little bit -- how much so would depend on its price.

NEW RAZR PHONES: Motorola is upgrading its Razr lineup on Verizon, and as in the past these Android phones will be big sellers, I can say with confidence.

MICROSOFT TABLET: The Surface tablet from Microsoft debuts in October.
A couple words on this: Too late. Microsoft will not do well with this, I can safely say. With so many tablets already on the market, it will be very hard for them to make a dent with the Surface, especially since the price won't be far off from the iPad's. No name recognition = no sales.

NEW BLACKBERRY PHONES: No need to explain. They're done for. Have been for a while. New phones won't measure up to offerings by Apple, Samsung and others, and I wouldn't be surprised if Blackberry maker RIM is absorbed by another company within the next year. They can't sustain their current business model, as people have moved on from their products. Period.
